monteriggioni

photo: david lindley

despite the grandeur of siena, it's history and architecture, it didn't quite stack up in my mind as well as the tiny little village of monteriggioni. perched on a hill just to the north of siena, it is notable mainly for it's complete circuit of 13th century walls, which from a distance are so imposing. up close though there's not much too the place: a pretty square, an attractive church, nice houses tightly packed together along picturesque alleys...but very peaceful after the bustle of the city; a great place to chill with a glass of proseco (or two).
