domestic violence

a sign by a dusty highway in namibia. noteworthy to me not for the message, laudable though that undoubtably is, but for the fact that it is in english. namibia was a german colony at one time and, although it had subsequently become part of the british empire and tucked under south africa's wing, i fully expected german to be far more prevalent in daily usage. it turns out that english is the official language and, apart from the odd street and company name, german seems pretty well limited to the decendents of the original settlers.

actually, i don't know if domestic violence is a really big issue in namibia but i do think that it's pretty enlightened for a 'third world' country to even have a sign of this nature. over here, the subject seems to be hardly even mentioned, as if we'd rather not face up to such things.
