![]() photo: sue lindley of course, this is what you really want to see! namibia is sometimes called the cheetah capital of the world. it is estimated that, whereas at the begining of the 20th century there were as many as 100,000 cheetahs across africa and asia, there are now as few as 15,000. of this total some 2,500 are to be found ranging free in namibia. the cheetah is not a strong predator. it has a fairly weak jaw and relies on its speed to catch and trip fleeing prey, when it will try to suffocate the animal - usually the smaller of the antelope family - by biting its throat. as a consequence the cheetah is not equipped to fight of animals that wish to steal its catch or defend its young: up to 90% of cheetah cubs are killed by lions, hyenas or even by eagles. | |
