![]() photo: david lindley of course i knew before we came that namibia was a dry, desert and deserted country but i don't really think it sank in until we went to sossusvlei to see the massive dunes that extend so far along the coast. one of the best ways to get the impression of what the place is like though is to take a dawn hike up the famous dune 45. a steep and exhausting climb (damn i'm unfit...all these youngsters skipping past me!) up to the top of what is reputedly one of the tallest dunes in the world - a lie exposed when you get to the top and see many, many such dunes receding into the distance - it's a wonderful place to watch the sun rise in the morning. more sand facts tomorrow. | |
