sossusvlei i, dunes, desert

photo: sue lindley

sossusvlei is actually the name given to the pan, or valley floor that you drive along to reach the dunes, surrounded on all sides by towering dunes. it still exists as it is also the floor of a once huge river called the tsauchab; in years of extraordinary rainfall the water still flows along this path (though these days it stops many miles from the sea, swallowed by the vast desert) filling the pan with water and leading to the odd site of ducks and flamingos wading around the dunes.
