![]() photo: sue lindley all the dunes in the namib are formed of grains of quartz with a few heavy minerals present; apparently the red colour is from the relatively high quantity of iron in the sand - the guide offered to prove this had anyone had a magnet on them...sadly i'd left mine at home. the dunes of namibia are known sometimes as a dune sea because they're always on the move. the largest dunes may only move 1m per year but some kinds of dune can travel up to 50m, which can cause trouble for the nation's relatively limited transport system. | |
