sossusvlei iii

photo: david lindley

there are four types of dune found in namibia:

transverse dunes ~ found close to the coast they lie perpendicular to the storng winds from the south
multi-cycle dunes ~ such as these found around sossusvlei, formed by winds of equal strength blowing from all directions
parallel linear dunes ~ 100m high dunes running north to south caused by strong south and east winds
barchans ~ the most mobile dunes most visible in kolmanskop where they are gradually burying this deserted town
