 photo: david lindley the namib desert, of which the dunes around sossusvlei form a very small part, is a narrow strip of land stretching for 2000km north along the coast and never extending more than 200km inland. it passes through three countries, south africa, namibia and angola and to the west it is bordered by the cold waters of the atlantic ocean whose waves carry much of the sand, washed downstream along the orange river, that feeds it. the namib desert is reckoned to be the oldest desert in the world, having endured arid conditions for as long as 80 million years; the climate has of course fluctuated in that time but the cold water current that borders the desert has largely helped maintain these conditions. | |
