swakopmund iv

photo: david lindley

the herero people make up about 8% of the population; this lady in swakopmund was wearing the traditional outfit of a herero woman. it was heavily influenced by european missionary workers in the 19th century and apparently contains around 12m of material! the peculiar hat she's wearing is apparently supposed to symbolize the horns of the cape buffalo.
