![]() photo: david lindley from swakopmund we headed up the skeleton coast to the seal colony at cape cross. there are 16 colonies along the namibian coast of which this is the most accessible and famous. estimates of the population of the cape fur seals varies from 80,000 to 250,000 depending on the season and the first thing that strikes you (literally) as you approach the seals is the stench! i guess that 80,000 seals will do that!! what is also amazing is how close you can get to them, especially as there were a large amount of pups around; a fact that the local jackal fraternity weren't ignorant of either - you can see one of them scavenging around the edges of this group at the top of the photo. | |
