 photo: david lindley president hugo chavez is a love him or hate him kind of guy: some western governments, the rich and sections of the middle classes hate him; the poor and the dispossessed love him. perhaps he's hated because he's a threat to oil supplies, or that he's a friend of fidel, perhaps because he has independent thoughts, or perhaps because he's decided that all of the country's wealth being held in the hands of a (very) few isn't such a good idea. we met a couple from caracas who thought he was sending the country to rack and ruin; it seems they were mightily affronted by the fact that the chavez goverment gives interest free loans to poor people to start up businesses and as a consequence they were losing a servant they'd had for twenty-odd years. his face is plastered all over venezuela, usually in support of someones attempt to become mayor, police chief, governor or whatever. chavez is the guy on the left, i've no idea who the other one is. | |
