![]() photo: david lindley the road to puerto ayacucho necesitates three river crossings; the last and widest being when you cross the rio orinoco. however, there are no bridges so the crossing has to be made by way of what can only be described as a floating pontoon, pushed/pulled across the rivers by a small boat with an outboard motor. the other problem is that this is a very quiet road so, economics being what it is, the ferry will only cross when it's full. as a consequence, on both sides of the river small hamlets have sprung up to sell food, drink and assorted tat to those who have to travel the road. this photo, therefore, represents what can only be described as a service station, or drive through, in those parts. the venzuelans even have their very own fast food: the arepas, which is a type of cornmeal burger bun, toasted and filled with chicken, minced beef or cheese. delicious and fast. | |
