![]() photo: david lindley they say that, in the rainy season, it's highly unlikely that piranhas would ever attack a human: something to do with there being a far larger volume of water in which to live they're not so bothered about attacking intruders. also, of course, most piranhas are actually vegetarian. anyway, emboldened by this knowledge we felt safe enough to have a little dip in the rio orinoco. a little downstream, and despite the orinoco being swollen with rainwater and murky with silt, some local women were washing sheets in the river. their drying couldn't be easier as these large volcanic rocks that pepper the region get super-heated in the sun, so much so that it's pretty unbearable to even stand on one for more than a second or two, as we soon found when we got out. | |
