grand savannah village

photo: david lindley

this little village doubled up as the local airport and the starting point for the treks up-river to end up at angel falls, five days away. the 'airport' terminal was also the local bar and souvenir shop. they did good trade in the bar the day we spent there!

the indigenous people here make a type of chilli sauce, which has ants as an ingredient; when offered one to try i obviously felt it'd be churlish to turn it down: 'mmmm, bacon' was actually what i thought. sadly, even though ants aren't exactly filling, there were no seconds.

village life was, shall we say, sleepy. no electricity meant early nights, and the heat during the day meant that the people putting up the roofing shown here progressed very, very slowly, as did the pace of life in general.
