![]() photo: david lindley the cliffs in the background are known as tepuis and are basically flat-topped mountains rising from the otherwise flat amazonia region of venezuela. up close they're an amazing, awesome sight as they rear up in front of you, unassailable, otherworldly. it's no surprise therefore to find that they inspired sir arthur conan doyle when he wrote 'the lost world'; when you're down below, peering up the vertical cliffs with their myriad of plunging waterfalls you can easily imaging ancient animals having escaped the clutches of time and still living undiscovered as they had for millenia. | |
