landscape, loch

photo: david lindley one of our favorite places to walk in england is along hadrian's wall, in particular the stretch between once brewed and housesteads roman fort. i love the feeling of remoteness, the fantastic views, the wind sweeping in from the north and the feeling of ancient history in the stones beneath you. you can easily imagine being a roman legionary, cursing his luck and wondering what he'd done to deserve such a godforsaken posting. despite the coachloads of tourists who visit the fort itself, you're unlikely to even see many other people en-route, the vast majority of people seemingly reluctant to travel too far away from the relevative comfort of the tea shop. certainly few venture far along the wall; unaware that just a short distance away is crag loch, a place of desolte beauty, their loss is our gain.
